By Air : Turkish Airlines (THY) provides an important network of domestic flights from the intemational airports of Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, Trabzon, Dalaman and Antalya to all of the major Turkish cities. By Sea : Turkish Maritime Lines has several coastal services providing excellent opportunities for sightseeing. They leave from Galata Bridge (Karakoy side), Sirkeci and Eminonu. The Akdamar Island boats have daily services during the tourist season. There is also the train ferry across Lake Van from Tatvan to Van, continuing to Iran. For further information, see Useful Addresses.

By Rail : The wide network of the Turkish State Railways connects most major cities. The trains have couchettes, sleeping cars, restaurants, with lounge cars offering first and second class service.
In the Aegean region, it is possible for groups to charter a steam train which has all kinds of facilities for trips with a route of your choice allowing you a more relaxed way of traveling through this beautiful region. Train charters are also available for all areas of Turkey for large groups.

Road Network : Turkey has an extensive network of well maintained roads linking its towns, cities,and popular tourist areas. When arriving from Europe, the Bosphorus crossing to Asia has been greatly facilitated by the completion of the istanbul bypass, and the two Bosphorus (Bogazici) bridges which lead to the Istanbul - Ankara Expressway. The E80 and E90 are the two main roads leading to Turkey from European borders, they also link the Iranian and Iraqi borders. These expressways have been constructed according to Asian and Middle East International road network standards.

Road Signs : Turkish road signs conform to the International Protocol on Road Signs. Archaeological and historical sites are indicated by yellow signs.

Traffic Circulation : Traffic circulates on the right and the Turkish Highway Code is similar to those of European countries. Outside cities, traffic moves freely, the Istanbul - Ankara highway being the only one on which traffic is heavy. There is a 50 km./h. speed limit in urban centers and a 90 km/h limit outside urban centers.

Petrol : Filling stations are well distributed over all roads, and those on the main highways often have attached service stations and restaurants, and are open round the clock. Unleaded fuel is available at all stations.

Repairs : There are numerous repair garages in towns (grouped along special streets) and along principal highways. Spare parts are readily available. Turkish mechanics are well trained in the repair of both Turkish and foreign cars. In addition, assistance can be received from the Touring and Automobile Club

Car Rentals : There are many rent-a-car services in Turkey. They are placed on the airports, ports, and near by all big hotels. The addresses and prices can be obtained from the local Tourist Information Offices or travel agents.

Inter City Coaches : Many private companies provide frequent day and night services between all Turkish cities. Coaches depart from the bus station (otogar) in large towns, and from the town centre in smaller regions.

Taxis and Dolmus : Taxis are numerous in all Turkish cities and are recognisable by their yellow color. The fare shown on the meter reads according to the distance traveled.
The 'dolmus' a special service found only in Turkey, is a collective taxi which follows specific routes and is recognizable by its yellow band. Each passenger pays according to distance traveled and can get off at specific stops. The relatively cheap fares are fixed by the municipality. The 'dolmus' provides a service within large cities, to suburbs, airports, and often to neighboring towns. This is a very practical means of transport and much cheaper than a taxi.

ORNITHOLOGY

Turkey, situated at the crossroads of three continents, forms a bridge between the reproductive areas of birds in the north and their winter nests in the south. One of the most important stops for birds along this route is Izmir-Cesmealti. This area was declared a natural heritage region in 1985 and this has ofdered the possibility of natural and culturalk activities.

"Kus Cenneti" birds Heaven National Park near Bandirma, is another important example where natural and cultural values coexist. This area provides different environments. Bird's Heaven is a real heaven for both bird-lovers and ornithologists. Important places where different bird types exist include: Buyuk Menderes Delta, Lake Seyfe (near Kirsehir), Sultan Marshes (near Kayseri) and Goksu Delta (near Silifke). For more information:

Ala Mountains: Located in the Nigde region, near Kayseri, Yahyali is about 30 km. from this area. Demirkazik summit is 3756 meters and is the highest point in the Middle Taurus mountain range. Geomorphology includes greenhouses and very rich sources of flora and fauna.

Altinbesik Cave: Situated about 12 km. southeast of Aydinkent (Ibradi) and 55 km. north of Manavgat. Lakes and intersting rock formations within the cave area as well as travertines and styreams make this area especially fascinating. The authentic village of Urunlu is only 5 km. west of the Manavgat Valley. It's one our walk from Urunlu Village to Altinbesik Cave. Inside the cave are a variety of natural pools. The air inside the cave is quite humid with a temperature of 16 - 18 oC. valuable sources of geological and geomorphological samples exist here.

Altindere (Altindere valley): This park is situated in the province of Trabzon. This is the best known park in the Black Sea area; known for its natural beauty and for the famous Sumela Monastery. Facilities include picnicking areas cafes and a post office.

Baskomutan: This park was established as a monument 9on behalf of war veterans who lost their lives in the Independence War. The rich green park is located on the border of the Afyon province. Among the attractions in the park are the Open-Air Museum and Memorial and several cafes with music and entertainment. There is also a picnic area.

Beydaglari-Olympos (Bey Mountains): This park is west of Antalya near the antique sites of Phaselis and Olympos. Facilities include holiday villages, motels, restaurants, camping, picnicking, a museum and post office.

Beysehir Golu (lake Beysehir): 60 km. from Beysehir, there are wonderful geomorphological structures, beaut5iful birds; Hittite, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman remains. Camping and picnics are possible.

Bogazkale - Alacahoyuk: About 181 km. from Ankara, in Corum Province this park with rich flora and fauna also has camping, picnic sites and even a restaurant. A museum housing archaeological artifacts of the ancient capital of the Hittites and the historical site of Alacahoyuk can be found in tjis park.

Dilek Yarimadasi (Dilek Peninsula): In the province of Aydin, where Mt. Samsundagi plunges into the sea is a park of river valleys, flora, fauna, beaches and cliffs. Hiking, picnicking and water sports are possible. Wild horses, bobcats foxes and tortoises live in the park.

Gelibolu Yarimadasi (History Park - Gelibolu Peninsula): Situated near Canakkale, the whole peninsula has been dedicated to the memory of the many soldiers who lost their lives here.There are two entrences, Kilitbahir and Kabatepe that5 provide information on how to tour the area, and where the British, French, Australian, New Zealand and Turkish war memorials can be found. There are beaches, hotels, restaurants and attractive flora and fauna.

Goreme: Situated in the province of Nevsehir, Goreme is very interesting place gbecause of its rock cone and fairy chimney landscape.The chapels date from the Seljuk and Byzantine periods and the underground cities and churches are located in this area. Among the attractions in the park are the open-air-museums, holiday villages, campsites, restaurants and shopping centers.

Gulluk Dagi - Termessos (Mt. Gulluk): This park is near Antalya toward Korkuteli with wild scenery, flora and fauna, camping, restaurants picnicking areas and an open air museum.

Hatilla Valley: Located on the eastern Black Sea 10 km. nortwest of Artvin on the Coruh river. Also 25 km. from here is a very beautiful valley sloping to 90% in some place4s. Rare types of plants, geology, geomorphology and rich sources of the most valuable flora and fauna are found in this region.

Honaz Dagi (Mt. Honaz): Located in the Aegean region near Denizli. This is one of the most beautiful and highest points in the Aegean region at an altitude of 2.528 m. Geology , Geomorphology and rare types of flora and fauna can be found here. This area is famous because early Christians settled on the northern slope; the name of this ancient site is Colossae and remains of this settlement can still be seen.

Ilgaz Dagi (Mt. Ilgaz): South of Kastamonu (45 km.) is a park in a beautiful landscape, with attractive flora and fauna, also 0providing picnic facilities.

Kackar Mountains: Located on the eastern Black Sea region near Rize. There is a pine grove 16 km. from here; the highest point is 3.932 m. Boasting a very rich geology with a wide variety of valuable flora and fauna from the Mediterranean region and the Black Sea area.

Karagol - Sahara: Located near the Artvin city limits near Savsat in the northeastren area. Karagol is covered with beautiful forest with the most rare and magnificent views. Sahara National Park can be found here with its wonderfull alpine lakes and the Sahara Plateau which is 1700-1800 m. high.Wildlife is plentiful including bears. Karagol has recreational and picnic facilities.

Karatepe - Aslantas: This park is situated in the Ceyhan River Valley in Adana province. There are Hittite and Roman remains, hills, valleys, flora as well as camping and picnicking possibilities.

Kaz Dagi (Mt. Ida): Mt.Kaz National Park, situated near Edremit Bay, is reckoned to be one of the most beautiful national parks in Turkey. Mt. Kaz is 1774 meters and the park features lovely springs and beautiful trees. Throughout history Ida was known as a holy mountain. This mountain also has mythological significance, according to mythology, the first beauty contest was held on this mountain. The Trojan King's son Paris, who was renowned for the importance he gave to beauty, was the head of the jury, so in the contest, that was held between Aphrodite, Hera and Athena, Aphrodite was chosen first. Every year to mark this occasion, a beauty contest is held in Mt.Kaz National Park.

Kizil Dagi (Mt. Kizil): A beautiful park of cedar trees situated between Isparta and Konya, west of the town of Sarkikaraagac and on the northern edge of Lake Beysehir with camping and picnicking facilities.

Kovada Gol (Kovada Lake): This park is near Isparta toward Konya with typical forest scenery, lake flora and fauna. Excellent for water sports, climbing, camping, fidhing and picnics.

Koprulu Kanyon (Koprulu Canyon): The Kopru River has carved a 14 km. long canyon 92 km. norteast of Antalya. There is the Roman Oluk Bridge, the city of Selge in the higher part of the park, an open-air museum, flora, camping, fishing and picnicking plus restaurants.

Kus Cenneti (Bird Paradise): In the povince of Balikesir 18 km. south of Bandirma is a bird preserve with over 200 species; it is an important stopover and rest area for many European species. There is a museum and tours to observe the birds. Bird Paradise has received an "A" certificate from the European Union.

Munzur Vadisi (Munzur Valley): In the povince of Tunceli, yhis park has streams full of trout, springs, flora and fauna. Camping, picnicking and fishing are possible.

Nemrut Dagi (Mt. Nemrut): This famous mountain is lovated in southeast Anatolia between the Adiyaman (100 km.) and Kahta (65 km.) regions. This park houses a memorial to King Antiochos and the Eski Kale, Yeni Kale, karakus Tepesi and Cendere Koprusu are the symbols that make this park a most interesting visit.

Soguksu: This park is situated at Kizilcahamam, in Ankara with thermal springs and a forested plateau with small valleys. Facilities include a hotel, restaurants, camping, climbing and picnicking places.

Spil Dagi (Mt. Spil): Situated in Manisa province this park has interesting flora, fauna and thermal springs. Camping climbing and picnicking are possible. Inside the park is Niobe Rock, the mythical weeping rock, a relief of Cybele, old caves and canyons and wild Manisa tulips.

Uludag (Mt. Ulu): The ancient Mt.Olympus of Mysia near Bursa (35 km.) at a height of 1800-1900 m. with forests and lakes, is good for walks, picnics and winter sports. There are hotels, chalets, restaurants, post office, skiing and camping.

Yedigoller: "Seven Lakes",north of Bolu, with its lakes full of fish, is surrounded by beautiful forests. There is a museum and an exhibition of wildlife, restaurants, chalet accommodations, camping, fishing and picnicking.

Yozgat Camligi (Yozgat Pine Grove): Situated 5 km. from Yozgat one finds this park of forests, green hills and valleys, flora and fauna. Camping and picnicking are possible.

THERMAL RESORT

In Turkey, there are about 1000 thermal springs scattered throughout western Anatolia. Additional information: see Tourist Information Office. Thermal spas with facilities for therapeutic treatments are as follows:

Bursa - Cekirge: Most of the thermal springs, in both modern and historical settings, are in the district of Cekirge. The waters contain bicarbonete, sulphur, sodium, calcium and magnesium (47-78^oC) and are suitable for both drinking and bathing cures. Benefical for rheumatic, gynecologic and dermatologic, diseases and for the metabolism. A wide range of accommodations in 1st to 4th class hotels is available, as is medical supervision.

Denizli - Pamukkale and Karahayit: North of Denizli (20 km.) with accommodations of 500 total bed capacity. Thermal waters contain hydrocarbonate, sulphur, calcium carbondioxide and iron (33-56^oC, radioactive) and are suitable for drinking and bathing, benefitting heart and circulatory complaints as well as digestive, gall bladder. rheumatic and kidney diseases.

Izmir - Balcova : It is 10 km. west of Izmir with a 400 bed capacity and hasthe largest indoor thermal pool in Turkey. Ege Univetsity recognizes the value of these hot springs and has built a treatment center nearby. The water (62^oC) is suitable for drinking and bathing benefitting sciatica, gynecologic, nervous disorders plus intestinal and urinary problems.

Izmir - Cesme : The Bay of Ilica and Sifne (7 km.east of Cesme) have accommodation available in every category and class with a total capacity of 2000 beds. Waters contain chloride, sodium, magnesium, fluoride (42-55^oC) and are suitable for drinking and bathing benefitting sciatica, gynecologic, nervous disordes plus intestinal and urinaru complaints as well as the metabolism.

Yalova : These thermal springs are situated 11 km. southwest of yalova with a bed capacity of 600-800 in hotels and guest houses. The thermal waters contain sulphur, sodium ans calcium (55-60^oC) and are suitable for drinking and bathing cures. beneficial for rheumatic, gynecologic, urinary and nervous complaints and nervous complaints and controls cholesterol and lipid levels.

Afyon - Orucoglu : Orucoglu Thermal Center is 14 km. from Afyon. The temperature of the spring water is 49^oC. The water is rich in carbon dioxide, sodium, bicarbonete, dsodium chloride, bromide and fluoride. It has beneficial effects on arthritis, sciatica, disc hernia, neuritis, neuralgia, lumbago, osteoathrosis ans after orthopedic surgery and various other surgical treatments such as post-operative theraphy. It can also be used in the rehabilitation of spastic children and polio patients with mental retardation. Patients with skin ailments like psoriasis, feeding problems, stomach intestine, gall bladder, kidney, urinary tract and gynecologicdisordes and muscle and nerve fatigue also benefit from it. It is good for balancing the iron ratio and has rehabilitation value in the treatment of hemiplegia. There is a modern complex in the area.

Afyon - Hudayi : Southwest of Sandikli (10 km.) in Afyon province, there is a small treatrement center with a 100 bed capaqcity. Waters contain sulphur, hydrocarbonate, sodium, calcium, carbon-dioxide, bromide and fluoride (60-70^oC, radioactive)and are good for drinking and bathing benefiting,rheumatic, skin, gynecologic and digestive complaints.

Balikesi - Gonen : Situated to north of Balikesir, it has a treatment center with a 381 bed capacity. Thermal waters contain su;phur, chloride, sodium, hydrocarbonate and carbondioxside (52^oC). Suitable for both drinking and bathing cures, the waters are benifical for dermatologic, liver, rheumatic, urinary and nervous complaints

Bolu : It is on the Ankara-Istanbul highway- 4 km.south of Bolu with a 250 bed capacity. Waters (44^oC) contain calcium. magnesium, sulphu, bicarbonete and benefit the cures of rheumatism, neuralgia, sciatica and gyncologic, liver and kidney diseases.

Bursa - Oylat : Appoximately 27 km. south in Inegol county, the water is very warm; the steam bath is heated to 40^oC and the spring waters are 10oC. The waters contain sulphur, bicarbonete, calcium, hyrdrogen ions and iron. With diuretic properties, the drinking and bath cures have a relaxing and sedative effect. There are two hotels and four motels.

Sivas - Balikli (Yilanli) Cermik : This interesting spa is situated 12 km. norteast of kangal in the province of Sivas. Thye waters (35^oC) contain bicarbonete, calcium and magnesium. In the baths are many small fish (2-10 cms) and these play an important part in the cure of psoriasis. The waters are also beneficial for rheumatism, skindiseases, arterial sclerosis and gynecologic complaints. There are motels, restaurants and camping facilities as well as shops for provisions.

Canakkale - Kestanbol : Located 15 km. into Ezine county 2 km. from the Sea of Marmara. The waters of the various springs range between 21^oC and 67^oC, containing chloride, sodium, iron carbon-dioxide and calcium. At the Thermal springs beneficial bath cures, mud-bath cures, steam and geyser-cures are available.

Ankara - Kizilcahamam : It is 86 km. from Ankara. 975 m. above sea level. The waters (37-47^oC) contain sodium, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate and chlorine. Good for drinking and bathing benefitting the cures of rheumatism neuralgia, gynecologic and digestive disorders.

Mugla - Sultaniye : A sunken area Koycegiz county, with warm waters between 25^oC and 43^oC, containing chloride, sodium, hydrogen, sulfide and bromide. Would someone come to Turkey just to eat out? Yes, they would. Turkish food is famous throughout the world. The painstaking preparation of simple, but fresh ingredients brings out the richness of their flavors in a way that never fails to delight. The range is enormous, from a number of soups to an astonising variety of meze (hors d'oeuvre), followed by meat and fish dishes. Then pause awhile to contemplate the famous Turkish sweets and pastries before finishing with a Turkish coffee. All Turkish food is orepared from fresh ingredients.
The country produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and being surrounded on three sides by sea, the range of fish to be found is also considerable.

Among alcoholic drinks are the light Turkish beer, excellent wines and the national drink "raki" (an anisette), which clouds when water is added, giving it the popular name of "lion's milk" . The drinking of raki is a rite in itself and it is traditionally accompanied by a variety of "meze" (hors d'ouvre). Along with world famous Turkish coffee. Whereever you go, coffee or tea will be offered to you. Bottled drinking water and mineral water are easily found everywhere. Tap water is drinkable but the taste is not good because it is chlorinated.

Hospitaly :
Hospitally is one of the cornerstones of the Turkish way of life. Following Koranic tenets and naturally friendly intincts, the Turk is a most gracious and generous host. Even the poorest peasant feels bound to honor his guest (misafir) in the best possible manner. Hospitally is taken to such lengths that a foreigner often feels he is suffering from an overdose of it after being piled with food and drinks for hours and being unable to refuse anything, lest he hurt his host's feelings. In addition to ensuring a guest's material well-being, the Turk makes every effort to converse, no matter what linguistic barriers might exist. While most middle-class urban-dwelling Turks speak at least one European language, even the uneducated bravely struggle to make themselves understood, with remarkable success.

Turkish coffee houses:
Even the smallest Turkish village has its coffee-house or "kahvehane" where men can talk, sip coffee and play the national game of backgammon (tavla). In Istanbul especially, men can still be seen smoking their hubble bubble pipes (nargile) in these coffee houses.

Turkish baths :
Oving to teh emphasis placed on cleanliness in Turkish society, there have been public bath-houses (hamam) in Turkey since medieval times. There are separate baths for men and women or when there is only one bath house in the town, different days or times of day are allocated for men and women. After entering the "hamam" and leaving one's clothes in a cubicle, one proceeds wrapped in a towel (pestemal) to the "gobek tasi", a large heated stone where one perspires and is rubbed doen by a bath attendant. If the heat proves too much, one can retire to a cooler room for a while. This method of bathing is most refreshing and many of the old marble baths are very interesting, architecturally.

a) "Yagli Gures"
- "Grease Wrestling" is the Turkish national sport and ever year, in July, wrestling championships are held in Kirkpinar, outside Edirne. The contest is made more difficult by the fact that the wrestlers smear themselves with oil.

b) "Cirit Oyunu"
- The "javelin game" of daredevil horsemanship is a sport where wooden javelins are thrown at horseman of opposing teams to gain points. The game is played mainly is Eastern Turkey. Also in Selcuk, in Aegean Region you can watch camel flights (in January), but it for for some reason weat her does not permit, dont despair, camel flights are held in many small towns throughout the springtime. FOLK MUSIC
The lively Turkish folkmusic, which originated on the steppes of Asia, is in complete contrast to the refined Turkish classical music of the Ottoman court. Until recently, folkmusic was not written doen, and the traditions have been kept alive by the "asiklar" (troubadours). Distinct from folkmusic is Ottoman military music, now performed by the "mehter takimi" (Janissary Band) in Istanbul, which originated in Central Asia and is played with kettle drums, clarinets, cymbals and bells. The mystical music of the Whirling Dervishes (Mevleviler) is dominated by the haunting sound of the reed pipe or "ney" and can be heard in Konya during the mevlana Festival in December.

FOLKDANCES
Each region in Turkey has its own special folkdance and costume and the best-known of these are listed below:
a) "Horon" - This Black Sea dance is performed by men only, dressed in black with silver trimmings. The dancers link arms and quiver to the vibrations of the "kemence" (a primitive kind of violin) .

b) "Kasik Oyunu" - The Spoon Dance is performed from Konya to Silifke and consists of gaily dressed male and female dancers"clicking" out the dance rhythm with a pair of wooden spoons im each hand

c) "Kilic Kalkan" - The Sword and Shield Dance of Bursa represents the Ottoman conquest of the city. It is performed by men only, dressed in early Ottoman battle dress, who dance to the sound of clashing swords and shields, without music.
d) "Zeybek" - In this Aegean dance, colorfully dressed male dancers called "efe" symbolize courage and heroism.

FOLK HEROES
a) "Nasrettin Hoca" - A 13th century humorist and sage Aksehir. His witticisms are known throughout Turkey and are often used to make a point.

b) "Karagoz" - Another jester, said to have lived in Bursa in the 14th century and now immortalized as- a shadow puppet. Karagoz is a rough man of the people, who uses his ribald wit to get the better of his pompous friend, Hacivat. The puppets are made from gaily painted, translucent animal skin and are projected onto a white screen

c) "Yunus Emre" The 13th century folk philosopher-poet is one of Turkeys national treasures. His basic themes were universal love, friendship, brotherhood and divine justice. His simple and pure writing brings out a deep meaning for his readers and although he lived over 700 years ago, his work is still timely and though provoking.

d) "Koroglu" A 15th century folk poet. Koroglu was a role model for his contemporaries and a hero of his time. His adventures have been recounted for centuries with prestige and vigor and perheps now with more interest than ever. Korogli was one of the first people to pioneer the ideal of unconditional help for the poor and down-trodden. He was also a great champion against the confines of government control and harassment.

It is generally advisable to inform the Turkish Mountaineering Club of the region and time of the intended climb, before the trip. The club will then inform the relevant authorities in the region so that they will be prepared to assist, should it be necessary.

Bey Mountains: These mountains are situated west of Antalya and reach a height of 3086 meters. Th best starting points are from Antalya-Kemer and Antalya-Elmali. Climbing is possible year round. The trip to the top of Kizlar Sivrisi (3070 m.) and back can be made in a day by camping in Sedir Forest Tahtali (2344 m.) can be reached from Kemer. Driving to Soguk Pinar and camping there, the climb is made easily. The view of the Mediterranean from the top atrracts many climbers.

Kackar Mountains: Stretching for 30 km. parallel to the back Sea between Rize and Hopa, these ranges have peaks up tp 3932 m. in height with numerous glaciers , lakes, forests and hot springs. The mountains are divided into four massifs:Vercenik, Kackar (Kavron), Altiparmak and Hunut. Although all of these massifs have camping, climbing and hiking areas, the most popular of these treks is the Trans-Kackar route starting from the Ayder village, known for its beauty and hot springs. You may travel by car to the west to enter the foothills of the Trans-Kackar route all the way up to Asagi Kavron, where you continue on foot from Yukari Kavron to the Bogazcayiri natural camping area. From here the summit of Kackar is about 7-9 hours trek at an altitude of 3932 m.. When you come down on the Eastern side you can also visit the Buyuk Cay Valley going on to Yaylalar Village and from there again by car on to Barhal. This entire area is known for its friendly people and hospitable neighbours.

Ala Mountains: Situated 60 km. southeast of Nigde, running in an easterly direction, the Yedi Goller Plateau lies at 3100 m. and is surrounded by high peaks. The ideal season for ascending is June-September and the mountains are accessible via Nigde, Camardi and Cukurbag. The starting poin for ascending the Demirkazik at 3756 m. (there and back 9-10 hours) is Sokullupinar, about 3 hours walk from Cukurbag. Starting from Yedi Goller Vadisi (Valley of the Seven Lakes) one can ascend up to Kizilkaya (3725 m., there and back in 10 hours), ande Direktas (3470 m - 10 hours). For ascending in the Kaldi group, the highest peak of which is 3734 m., the base camp should be made on the Sinekli Plateau.

Hasan Mountain: Situated south of Aksaray at a height of 3250 m. Hasan Mountain is accessible from all directions. Thye ideal starting points are Taspinar on the Ankara - Adana road and the village of Helvadere in the Ihlara valley. Route plans and mountainering guides are available from the tourist Information Offices of the respective regions.

Erciyes Mountain: This extinct volcano, the highest peak (3917 m.) in central Anatolia, lies to the south of Kayseri. The Tekir Plateau is a recreational area in summer and a good skiing area in winter and it is reached via Hisarcik. The plateau is also yhe starting point for ascending the peak from the north face. The climb there and back takes 10-12 hours and on the plateau is a 100-bed capacity chalet. Another route goes over the glacier called Sutdonduran.

Bolkar Mountains: They are situated in the middle of the Toros Mountains. Lying on the Ankara-Adana road. The best starting points, in order to reach the peaks of Kizilyar (3654 m.) and Turasan (3499 m.), are Maden Koyu near Ciftehan and Elmapinar near Camalan. Buyuk Agri Mountain: This is highest mountain (5137 m.) in Turkey with its peak totally capped by a glacier. Th best seasons are July-September. Dogubeyazit is the starting point for climbing the southern face, via the village of Topcatan. A plateau leads to this highest point (5137 m) in Anatolia. The mountains is alsolegendary for its friendly people.

Suphan Mountain: This is the third highest peak (4059 m.) in Turkey and has a crater lake. Starting from Adilcevaz the trip to the top and back takes about three days.

Cilo - Sat Mountains: This range, located in the east has numerous glaciers, lakes and streams, so it is an ideal region for mountaineering and rambling. The best season for climbing and hiking is June-September. The starting point is the high plateau of Mercan, 5 hours walk from the Gndarme post of Zap (18 km. from Hakkari). Access to the Gelyasin Peak (4135 m.) is via the high plateau of Serpil and access to the Kisara peak (3752 m.) is via the village of Kursin and So. The track to the Samdi Peak and the surrounding glaciers starts from the "Sat Gevaruk" Pasture. The glacier lake Bay Golu surrounded by alpine flora lies at 2700 m.

Mercan (Munzur) Mountains: Ranging from 3462 m. to 3500 m. this range lies between Tunceli and Erzincan. The highest peaks are north of Ovacik

Bursa - Uludag: This ski center, 36km south of Bursa is accessible along a good asphalt road or by cablecar. The ski area lies between 1900-2500 m. and the best season is from December to February. Kastamonu - Ilgaz Mountain: Situated between Kastamonu and Cankiri 40 km. from Kastamonu at the junction of the Istanbul - Kastamonu, Ankara - Kastamonu roads. In the Ilgaz Natioanl Park amids beautiful woodlands, the slopes lie at 1850 - 2000 m.. There are picnic facilities, an hotel, chalets, two ski-lifts, a baby lift and a chair lift; there is also good hunting in the area.

Antalya - Saklikent: Situated norteast of Bakirli mountain in the Beydag mountain range, 50 k. north-weast of Antalya, at a height of 1850m. Accommodation is available in guest-houses or chalets. There are two ski lifts, restaurants, shops and a market. The best season is from January to April. During March and April, ski in the mornings then drive down the coast and swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean in the afternoons.

Kayseri - Erciyes: The ski center lies at 2150 m. on the eastren face of Erciyes Mountain, Tekir yaylasi (plateau), 25 km, from Kayseri. The rseason is from December to March; there is a 140 bed capacity ski lodge, good courses, a ski lift and chair lift. Ski instructors and equipment are available.

Erzurum - Palandoken: This center is 6 km. from Erzurum along a good road,lyingat an altitude of 220 t0 3100m. withy some of the longest courses and best snow conditions in Turkey, making it an ideal location for international ski competitions. Accommodation is available at a 140 bed ski lodge, an hotel with restaurant and a charlift. Ski instructors and equipment are available for hire. Also, these are a number of hotels in Erzurum. December to April is the most suitable season.

Kars - Sarikamis: Situated 60 km. from Kars at 2250 m. this ski center too has good courses and ideal snow conditions; the area is also noted for its hunting. Accommodations are available in town or at the 80 bed capacity, centrally heated ski lodge, where ski lifts and ski instructors are available. The best season is from November to April.

Ankara - Elmadag: About 23 km, form Ankara, between 1500 and 1800 m. this a lovely olace to relax, get fresh air and do dine far away from the clamor and air pollution in the city. There is 10 room (33 bed) hotel, chalets (130 beds), two ski-lifts, a pleasantly decorated a la carte restaurant, a snack bar, disco and parking. The ski season runs from December to March.

Gumushane - Zigana: This center is 30 km. from Gumushane and lies at an altitude of 1870 m. above a pine-clad valley. There are ski lifts, a chair lify, ski lodge, cafeteria and restaurant. The season is from December to the end of April.

Agri - Bubi: At a distance of 40 km. from the city center, this ski center is situated in a lovely landscape where alpine streams intermingle with flora in the surrounding view. The ski season runs from December to March. There is a cablecar and a cafateria.

Erzincan - Bolkar: About 40 km. from Erzincan, there is boathouse and a chair lifts. The ski season runs from December to April.

Bodrum Castle Bodrum on the north shore of the Gulf of Gokova, was the home of the first "Blue Voyager", Cevat sakir kabaagac or the "Fisherman of Halikarnas". In the Gulf of Hisaronu is the peaceful Keci Buku Bay; the Bay Marina is rich in natural beauty:the surrounding mountains and forests and the long "Kizkumu" (sunken "pier"), a natural sand formation. Leaving the Gulf of Hisaronu, hidden away in its own exclusive inlet is the town of Bozburun, famous as one of the guletbuilding centers of Turkey. Loryma, at the tip of the Bozburun Peninsula where the ruins of the ancient harbor and castle remain, can only be reached by boat. Kumlubuk, a turquoise paradise, lies on the southern side of the bay; on the north side, above the water, stands the ancient Rhodian city of Amos. At Turunc a natural harbor opens out into a wide expanse of spectacular blue water. The next port is Marmaris.

Kusadasi is today a major holiday resort center. During the summer months it

WHEN TO SAIL THE TURKISH COAST

In summer, the winds normally blow from the northwest to southeast on the central and southern Aegean. This wind is commonly called the "meltem" although in some areas such as at Cesme, Izmir and Kusadasi, it is called the "imbat". In the early and late summer, the"meltem" blows less and there are days of little or no wind at all. Generally, the meltem will die doen at night and then resume the next day around midday. It can also blow day and night for days on end in the gulfs. The wind follows thye coast from the west and becomes weaker towards the heads of the gulfa. Gusts are particularly violent off the north coast of the Gulf of Gokova and the Gulf of Hisaronu. The meltem also blows in a westerly direction along the Mediterranean coasta as far as the Gulf of Finike.

Around the Gulf of Antalya, there are both land sea breezes with the latter predominating generally between the south and southwest. In the morning, there will often be a land breeze blowing from the north. Winds in the spring and autumn are almost equally divided between north and south, but in winter, winds and gales are predominatinantly from the south.

There is a meteorological bulletin on VHF 16, and 67, in English and Turkish, for the Mediterranean and Aegean region (Bodrum, Kusadasi, Marmaris, Antalya,Finike, Alanya, Anamur and Mersin). MARINAS AND RESORTS

All ports of entry in Turkey (listed in the section Passport and Visas) are in a positionto receive sailboats year round. Supplies (food and motor fuel) are also available.

Marinas provide mooring maintenance, reparation and dry-dock facilities and tourists, social and cultural services for yachtsmen

The following marinas maintain international standarts: Istanbul Atakoy, Istanbul Kalamis, Izmir Levent Marina, Cesme Altinyunus, Kusadasi, Bodrum, Marmaris Netsel Marmaris Albatros, Marmaris Bay Marina, kemer Turban, Fethiye Club Marina and Antalya Setur and Kaleici Marinas. Antalya Setur marina, which is managed by the Tourism Bank of Turkey, as is the holiday village of Altin Yunus at Cesme are open year round and are fully equipped.

Tourism: In recent years, Turkey has become a major tourist destination in Europe. It will affect agriculture, transportation, education, tourism, health and other sectors. ATATURK DAM, included in the project, is among the first 10 dams in the world.

Natural resources: The principal minerals extracted are coal, chrome (an important export), iron copper, bauxite, marble and sulphur.

Industry: Industry is developing rapidly and is directed mainly towards the processing of agricultural products, metallurgy, textiles and the manufacture of automobiles and agricultural machinery.

Turkey's lands mass is 814.578 sq km. The European and Asian sides are divided by the Istanbul Bogazi (Bosphorus), the Sea of Marmara and the Canakkele Bogazi (Dardanellas). Anatolia is a high plateau region rising progressively towards the east, broken by the valleys of about 15 rivers, including the Dicle (Tigris) and the Firat (Euphrates. There are numerous lakes and some, such as Lake Van, are as large as inland seas. The Twin Rocks

At the right side of the road, between Kemer and Çamyuva, two volcanic rocks, has an appearance as if hit by a meteor, are building a natural wonder.
You will meet Karataş (Twin Rocks), when you proceed to the right side of the bridge on the way before reaching Kemer. This place is also a hard climbing point for professional climbers.

Göynük Canyon

The canyon in Göynük maintains its mystery as an unknown natural wonder for years. Some hotels and tourism agencies arrange jeep safaries to reach the canyon, which is 5 km at the upper side of Göynük. Early in the mornings, accompanied by a guide, you can go tracking in the pine woods.

After an hour walk, having a splendid panorama all the time, you will reach the canyon. To go further you have to go in to water. When you reach the spring of the canyon, you will be fascinated by the view you encounter. The magnificent view, ensued by the step 300 - 350 m high mountains, which are worn out by waters by the time, captures big and little waterfalls as well. The canyon, with its deep valleys, narrows down to 6 m from time to time. It also provides opportunities to swim in its large ponds. The mysterious panorama of embraced mountains is approximately 6 km long. Tracking the valley takes approximately 3 hours. The valley, with its magnificent waterfalls, is a natural wonder worthwhile to see, and waiting to be discovered.

National Parks & Dying Out Creatures

The Mediterranean territory is, in the sense of natural and wild life of Turkey and the world, one of the important areas, which maintains its diversity. Studies are on going to help creatures maintain their existence and to stop the rapid pollution of this area. For this reason, the region of Termessos and Olympus at the province Antalya, have been determined as National Park territories. The aim is to protect the historical buildings, the vegetation and the wild animals.

The territory of Üç Adalar (the three islands) is the territory where the Mediterranean seals named as "Monachus Monachus" live and proliferate. 50 of the existing 300 Mediterranean seals are living here. "Caretta Caretta's" a kind of water turtle can be found in the bays of Ulupınar (Çıralı). Both species are under protection.

The Three Islands

There are four islands at the coast of Tekirova called Martı, Mağara, Piknik and Küçük island by the people of this region. Caves and Tombs

There is a cave of prehistoric times in Kemer - Beldibi. The Beldibi cave, which is on the road, near the Akyarlar tunnel, belongs to prehistoric times. Ceramics from the Mesolithic age, pot shreds and figures of wild goats painted with red ocher are interesting.
At the slope of the mountain Tahtalı (Olympus), western of Kemer is a cave with historical riches worthwhile to see. Another cave with historical riches at the boundary of Çamyuva-Göynük and a kings tomb in Göynük can be visited.

Adrasan

Adrasan, with its new name Çavuşköy, is with its 2 kilometers long sand beach an attractive choice for those who like to have a bath in the sea or under the sun. Adrasan is one of the rare places where local village people are involved in tourism. Inhabitants of Çavuşköy run 80 percent of the facilities. After having spent a few days in this place you will feel like one from the family.

Touring boats are arranging daily tours from Adrasan to surrounding bays. The bays of Suluada, Sazak and Ceneviz, which are two hours away, are haunt places of the boats. The local people claim that the water from Suluada, when drank with an empty stomach, is removing renal calculus. You can have a swim in a sandy beach with black and white stones spread around, looking like a mosaic, at the west side of the island. The Sazak harbour at the north is also known with its healthy water. It is said that the water from Sazak is good for the intestines. The port of Sazak looks like a natural pool.
The region bears traces from the Hellenistic era. This area didn't turn it in to a concrete mass since it has been under protection for many years. The sea of this city is, with its shallow water, an ideal place for children and those who can not swim. The bay invites activities like surfing or water skiing and has a visibility of 25 meters in its waters, which attracts divers to this place.

Chimera (Yanartaş)

An interesting natural beauty, the mythological Yanartaş (Chimera) is located in the north of Olympus, at the upper side of the Çıralı Beach. Belleraphon, on his winged horse Pegasus, has killed the fire-spewing dragon at this place. According to the myth the flames coming out of the stone are the flames that the dragon is spewing out of his mouth. The ruins of the temple, build in this area, which was considered as sacred by the Byzantine smith's, are still remaining next to Yanartaş. According to some historians the Olympic fire was taken from this place first time. The origin of this continuously burning fire is combustible gas.

The Ancient City Olympos

With its historical values, its 3200 meter long coast, the endemic plants, the Caretta Caretta, Chimera, the magnificent nature, allowing to perform all kinds of sport activities and its famous pension tree houses, Olympus has a justified reputation.

When you go down to Olympus, following the main road, accompanied with the fragrance of orange trees, you will meet with bungalow type tree houses. This place is the most important stop of travelers. Since there is no permission for construction, travellers spend the night in these tree houses. Olympus, another Lycian city, is located between the natural Adrasan Harbour, which is at the south foot of Mount Tahtali (Olympus), and the Ancient City Phaselis. It reflects the features of the Hellenistic era. The city used to be a shelter for the pirates until the Romans invaded it. Today it is a National Park and under protection. An Acropol, a bath, a temple, a theatre and a necropol are some of the ancient buildings in the city. The bay of Olympus is surrounded with walls and towers. Castles, constructed by Venezian, Genoese and Rhodian knights, are to be found in the city. The river passing through the center of the city, has served as a transportation channel throughout ancient times. The distance from Olympus to Kemer is 38 km. An Acropol, a bath, a temple, a theatre and a necropol are some of the ancient buildings in the city. The bay of Olympus is surrounded with walls and towers. Castles, constructed by Venezian, Genoese and Rhodian knights, are to be found in the city. The river passing through the center of the city, has served as a transportation channel throughout ancient times. The distance from Olympus to Kemer is 38 km. By yacht tours it is possible to reach the city from the sea.

The Ancient City Phaselis, which is located on the Bey Mountains Olympus National Park, among pine and cedar woods, is situated 16 km western of Kemer. With its three harbours, Phaselis used to have an important function in ancient times. With its shallow and stagnant waters and the fine sand, Phaselis has a unique beauty. There are aquaducts, agoras, bath, theatres, necropolis, acropolis and a museum in the city, reflecting the period from early ages to the Roman era. The saying is, that 690 B.C. colonists from Argos have founded the city.

Kemer (Idryos)

Idryos is the ancient name of Kemer, which was a Lycian city. Its exact location is in the north of Phaselis and the settling area in the southwest of The Kemer. The ancient art works of different areas are listed below.

The Church: The bazikal type church, having a neph with an abscissa in the center, a nartex, an exonartex, a chapel in the south, a babtisterium in the north and all the other structures around, is showing the features of a complex building.

Observation Spot: Located at the south end of the high hill in the north of the marina. It is surrounded with walls bounded with poligapol technique and has two towers at the south side, an entrance and one tower at the Northeast side.

Seljuk Hunting Lodge: There is a Seljuk Hunting Lodge, in the forest 200 meters at the right of the crossroad on the way to Antalya. Its location in the forest kept it unseen, that might be the reason why it survived over 700 years. It is unknown during which Seljuk Sultan's epoch it was build. But with a high probability that it was build at the time of Aleaddin Keykubat ( 1219-1236).

Moonlight and Yörük Park: You can see the lifestyle of the region's folk (the yörük's) in the Yörük Park in Kemer. These people live during summer time in the lower locations and move in wintertime to the high plateaus at the Taurus Mountains. Those who want to see the authentic life of the Yörük's can go up to the Gödene and Söğütcuma plateaus. For this purpose they can visit the villages around at the same time.
Ayışığı (Moonlight) Park Facilities will let you escape from your daily life stresses and have a great fun. Lycian Civilization

he peninsula, extending from the north end of the bay of Antalya, to the district Fethiye is covering the historical area where the Lycian civilization was settled presumably 600 B.C. This area, which gave us only a few findings about its historical development, has hosted many different civilizations. The archeological researches realized to this day, could not clarify the borders of this region, which has changed many times during historical periods.

The mosaic, created by historical remnants belonging to different periods, is creating a rich accumulation of culture. Lycian, in its time, used to be an important haunt on the trade rout from the Near East to ancient Greek. Therefore, the harbors of the cities at the coastline gained an important function. After two earthquakes in 141 A.D. and 240 A.D. the cities were reconstructed. After Lycian, the control of the area went over to Persian, Roman and Byzantine. Most of the remnants extant are from the Roman. You will set off towards a pleasant journey to ancient times when you visit Lycian cities.

KETAV, established on October 1994 by 19 investors from the region, attained juristic personality. KETAV has given service to the region in the field of international presentation for eight years. The foundation, which was established with support of Ministry of Tourism, is giving service in the offices in Kemer. KETAV has co-operated with Local Management's, Governership of Antalya province, Kemer and other cities' Municipalities, which are also themselves members of KETAV
Making a move to present locality in tourism results in approaching the problems of small cities on a larger scale and that provides to speed up and realize the works that local units of the goverment and local people become late to fulfill.

The climate in Kemer bears the Mediterranean climate features. The mild weather conditions offer holiday possibilities in all seasons. Sometimes you can experience in Kemer four seasons in one day. 300 days of the year are sunny.

In summer time it is rainless and hot. In winter time its rainy and mild. No snow falls to the coastline of the district. The mountains in the north and the mild wind from the south are reasons why it usually goes never below 10 Cº in this region. With the exception of a few weeks of rainy days, the seawater, which goes even in winter not below 15 Cº allows you to benefit from the sea all year long.

Kemer International Underwater Days

KETAV (Kemer Promotion Foundation) organized 1st International Underwater Days on May 2002 in cooperation with ASAD (Archeological Underwater Research Foundation and Y Production) with the aim of introducing underwater nature and archeological richness of Kemer shore. The organization that became traditional with the 2nd Kemer International Underwater Days on 16-19 May 2003 aims to meet the underwater lovers in the 3rd Kemer International Underwater Days on 16-19 May 2004. Anyone who wants to explore the riches of underwater of Kemer shores is invited to the organization. The Panels, Conversations and Tours will be held within four days following the competitions.

You can find old Hamams, which still carry the interesting architectural features of that period in the city or similar ones in the hotels.

In this historical Hamams you pass through a sequence of heat and steam phases, which purify you from stress and toxins, regulate the blood circulation and relax you. While traditional Hamams have separate sections for male and female, some Hamams at Hotels have special sections where male and female can have their bath together. In the middle of the bath is a heated marble slab, called "Göbek taşı". Rally Of Turkey (Anatolian Rally)

Are you ready to enjoy the pinnacle of the motorsports at the third edition of Rally of Turkey?

Rally of Turkey, the 7th round of the 2005 FIA World Rally Championship, will take place on 02-05 June 2004, Kemer - Kumluca – Antalya, perfect time of year to combine the rally experience with the perfect summer holiday.

This year’s rally will be welcoming PWRC (Production Car World Rally Championship) drivers for the first time, after two years of JWRC experience. All of 18 registered PWRC drivers have chosen Rally of Turkey in possible 6 out of 8 events.

While most of the itinerary has not been changed since last year, one of the main new aspects of the rally will be the change of start venue. Instead of Cumhuriyet Square, where start took place in last two years, ceremonial start of the rally will be held on Super Special Stage, in Akdeniz University.

This year SSS will be run three times in a row, On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Stage will be run twice time consecutively on Saturday night, therefore only on this day total distance of the stage will be 5.2 kms instead of 2.6 kms of Thursday and Friday.

The Service Park is once again located in Kemer town centre where spectators will have the opportunity to see these state of art cars being repaired between the stages.

In 2005 edition of the event, brand new Grand Haber Hotel, which is very close to Service Park, will be served as Rally HQ.

The Beaches
